At a high level, I’m both an adventure racer and a triathlete.  My participation in ARs has grown slowly and steadily since I saw Eco Challenge back in 2000 or 2001.  Every year I’ve participated  in  2-4 person male divisions, with 2010 being my best year.  That year, I was part of a 2 person team (Salamander with Joe) that won CheckPoint Tracker’s point series competing in six 24+ hour events as well as the Rev3 Cedar Point 140.6 full triathlon.

Why Adventure Racing?

I’m always up to try something new and every race is a different with new challenges. I guess it’s the thrill of the unknown and trying to be prepared for it.

Why Adventure Racing?

It is 2am, the mist is low making is hard to see further than 100 yards and your cloths are damp to the touch. No one else but your team mates are around and the long unified beam of light cast by your head lights bouncing off the section of woods that it illuminates is the only thing you can see anyway. You feel hungry, the thought of eating is nauseating but you know a necessity.  The trail mix congeals in your mouth and you sip some water to help wash it down and give the extra bit of energy you need.  Energy that keeps your tired legs moving forward, up the hill, through the under brush and onto the next checkpoint.

I started Adventure Racing because I was looking for a new challenge in my life. I spent years pushing the limits in sports like mountain biking, climbing, running and white water kayaking, and I knew that AR could bring all these elements together. Once I did my first race I was hooked, and it continues to deliver the adrenaline fix I need.

Why Adventure Racing?

Everyone has their release, the things they like to do to take the edge off. Adventure Racing is just that for me. It’s my fix, without it I’d go crazy!

Why Adventure Racing?

Adventure racing takes the persistence and drive required for endurance sports and combines it with teamwork, the skill of navigation and the excitement of the unknown. It is the only sport that combines all of my favorite hobbies into the perfect competition.

Ernie Lawas began his “adventure” career from humble beginnings as an avid rock and ice climber and mountain biker then branching into endurance sports via triathlons. The draw of a “thinking man’s” race and the element of the “unknown” along with the team nature of the
sport inspired him to begin adventure racing. Racing on a two-man team for the first few years led to his joining his current team, with which he as raced for the past 4 years.

Why Adventure Racing?

Driven to find the limits of the human body and spirit has been a key factor in his choice to go faster, harder and longer in this sport.

My first adventure race was a 6 hour sprint at Allamuchy in NJ in 2007.  I had wanted to try adventure racing since watching the Eco-Challenge on the Discovery Channel in the 5th grade.  After that first race, while racing with my brother John, we started doing 24 hour events, and dabbling in mountain bike racing, cyclocross and triathlons. My day job is a finite element analysis engineer for aerospace castings, and when I’m not racing or working, I’m enjoying the outdoors relative to whatever season is current.

Why Adventure Racing?

It’s so appealing to me because it involves so much more than just speed on a mountain bike, or speed on foot. It takes great amounts of endurance in body and mind, a tolerance for pain and misery, an ability to make decisions while utterly exhausted, and exposes you to courses which go far beyond taped off trails. A 24 hour AR packs into one day what most people can’t accomplish in a week.

I was a rower in high school and went on to row at Rutgers University on the varsity squad there for four years.  I learned everything I know about training from my years as a rower and its really translated well in adventure racing.  I found out about AR while watching a special on Discovery Channel about the ECO Challenge back in high school.  I watched that every night for 5 days while the series was running and after that I knew what I was going to be doing when rowing at the college level came to a close.

Why Adventure Racing?

I started with a 6 hour race with my brother and I at one of the NYARA events in Jersey and that was it… hooked for life.

I grew up playing lots of sports, including softball, cross country, basketball, soccer, swimming, and track. I went to college at Western Illinois University, where I majored in Exercise Science and played softball. I am an avid CrossFitter, and I have started getting into adventure racing and orienteering the last couple years.

Why Adventure Racing?

For me, adventure racing is all about discovering new places and testing my mental and physical limits. When you combine all of the disciplines of ARs into a race, you can create this incredible team atmosphere unlike any other sport I’ve competed in. I’m hooked for life.

I’m originally from Atlanta and after spending 22 years as a US Army Ranger, I now make my home in the Northeast Georgia Mountains.  For the past 8 years I’ve worked for the Rangers as a civilian training specialist and mountaineering instructor! So you could say that even though I’m a 50 year old AR rookie, I’ve been training for AR’s my entire life. I’m an avid runner, cyclist, endurance athlete, and a fanatical single speed mountain biker!  The previous three years I was member of Trakkers/Rev3 Age Group Triathlon Team but decided I would much rather spend my days and nights in the freezing rain, mud, etc… and have made a transition to the dark side of Rev3 racing!  I look forward to a member of the AR team this year!

Chris started adventure racing in 2004 after he was coaxed, prodded and ultimately convinced by his brother to get in shape by setting a physical goal.  Needless to say that first event was a disaster and I wound up getting lost in the woods without water for 3 hours.  8 years and 30 races later I’m still trying to find my way out of the woods.  During the week I work for The Rush Fitness in Knoxville, TN as their Human Capital Officer.

Why Adventure Racing?

I love the extreme challenge of pushing your body to the max and the camaraderie of doing something extreme with a team that relies on each member to complete the event.  I also like the fact that Adventure racing is a thinking sport that requires physical and mental skills to compete.

Raised on a farm South of town I earned my grown-up degree raising hogs, corn and fixing things on the Farm.  While most of our time was spent here, Mam and Dad made sure we had time for fun too.  Hiking, Climbing and Skiing in Colorado and hunting and fishing in Nebraska created great memories.  In fact the name Craig means “from the mountains”.  Dad said I could participate in sports in High School, but the only way to cover the 4 miles from town to home after a late practice was to run it or bike it.

Why Adventure Racing?

Name another sport that requires the combination of teamwork, strategizing, reasoning, navigation, operating different kinds of equipment in many different environments and conditions,  skills to repair equipment including yourself, seeing wildlife and areas of the country that few others get too.  All the while hanging out with teammates that have the same crazy gene that I do and a love of the great outdoors.

Born and raised in Hyannis, NE, population 200ish. Hyannis is the county seat and largest town for about 60 miles in all directions.  Inside activities were limited as cable tv was not available and our antenna pulled in one local channel.  Atari’s pacman was not able to keep my brothers and I inside.  We grew up exploring the sandhills of nebraska by bike, shoe, and 15 horse evinrude, if we could get it started (fishing with belly boats was our best option).  As we gained more trust from dad we were dropped off at lakes before sunrise and could be found glassing for wildlife from high vantage points in the evening.   The views and memories are still vivid today.

Why Adventure Racing?

Adventure racing places me in locations doing things I would never attempt on my own.  Being dropped off by a bus at 3AM, running down an abandon railroad track, jocking for position to grab a good canoe, only to get on the river to realize that visibility with headlamp on high is 10 meters. Not my typical day. Winning a race is a bonus, but the memories and commradre of teamates is what I rellish.  Soon the sun came up, with fog slowly rising off the river to faintly reveal 100 meter tall rocky cliffs on each side of the river.   Sleep deprivation, crazy temps and wrong turns aside, whats not to like about adventure racing?

I’m a long distance mountain bike racer; last season I started making the switch over to AR. I’d gone as far as I could in local MTB racing, won most everything I’d entered and was just doing the same races against the same people in the same venues.

Why Adventure Racing?

Last season I entered several races of varying distances: 26-hour, 12-hour, 6-8 hour. I used what I learned to isolate the areas I needed more work in. I took some orienteering classes and went to O meets, took a whitewater and a climbing class, and got certified as a Wilderness First Responder.

Why Adventure Racing?

I don’t know why but I know I have too. I cannot imagine not competing in this sport. Adventure Racing allows me to push my body, mentally and physically. Just when I think the tank is empty I go into this state where the pain goes away and I just ‘race’.

Been racing since 2007 where my sweet spot has been in races between 24-30 hours, but looking to expand to multi-day and 4 day races, like Untamed New England, in 2012.  In 2008, I traveled to Veracruz, Mexico to participate in the 6 day adventure racing camp – Pico to Playa where we hiked to basecamp of Pico de Orizaba, mountain biked down the side of the volcano through every terrain possible, white-water rafted down the El Pescadero in 2-person inflatable kayaks and navigated through some of the most remote jungles in the Veracruz.

I’ve been racing since age 13 when I gave up on balancing in high-heals and instead opted for a pair of sneakers.  I’m a typical outdoor fanatic and race adrenaline junkie with a history of backpacking, paddling, and even caving.  Highlights of my past lives as a marathoner and triathlete included the 2003 Boston Marathon, 3 iron distance triathlons, the 2010 ITU Long Course World Championship and 2011 70.3 World Championship.  I’m no stranger to mental endurance either having supported my husband through a 3 year battle with brain cancer than ended fall of 2010.  Since then I’ve vowed to savor every minute and racing is the purest joy you can find.

Why Adventure Racing?

Mostly, I love being in the wilderness and want to get back in the woods.  I’m excited about the challenge of mastering the mountain bike and the compass.  I love the variety and camaraderie which adventure offers.  Every fun thing I can think of doing, I can call training!
